13/03/2018 : March Auction Highlights

Some highlights from our March auction

Our March auction was another great sale - we had a full saleroom and there were lots more bidders online.

The star lot was this set of four Chinese Republic period porcelain plaques painted in the Famille Rose palette with scenes of birds among trees and flowers, which sold for £4,100 and also in our Oriental and Asian Art section were a set of five c1880 Chinese famille rose plates decorated in enamels with figures and flora, which brought £560.

A surprise result was this collection of Jacobs novelty biscuit tins from the 1930s which, after several telephone bids and many bids online, sold to a determined phone bidder for £1,950, far surpassing its estimate. Elsewhere in the sale, a 22ct gold proof Winston Churchill commemorative coin, 1874-1965 brought £900.

Our Art section was also well-represented, with this Gladys Maccabe ROI still life oil painting of flowers in vase, wine glasses, apples and paint brushes selling for £720 and an Arthur Dooley (1929-1994); a bronze study, 'Station of the Cross', produced for the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, which sold for £2,000.

We had some good results in our Lighting section, including a large Art Deco lamp depicting a scantily-clad female which brought £420, a set of five Art Deco style wall lights brought £380 and an Art Deco chrome ceiling light with frosted and Vaseline-tinted glass shades sold for £340.
